Many choose SSD on the principle of "more volume, smaller price". Here are such discs today and took on tests. It will be about two teprbaytniks: Patriot P210 for 7400 rubles and P300 for 7200. The first is a classic 2.5-inch drive on SATA. The second is more modern M.2 on PCIE 3.0 x4.
Patriot P210 SATA 1 TB
First, take a look at the SATA drive. Under the hood he has a four -channel controller SMI SM2259XT , TLC 3D nand -connected to the Memory of Memory Micron. Everything seems to be good, but the disk does not have a DRAM buffer, and in combination with this controller specifically-these are potential problems in mixed operations.
Crystaldiskmark This is what shows: when linear reading and recording speeds are excellent, like the top drives. But when working in mixed modes, at small depths of the queue, performance catastrophically falls, even SLC-cleansing does not help.
Cache size, according to the results in AIDA64 , In P210, SATA is approximately 10% of the drive capacity: then the disk moves to the data directly into the VNAND array and the speed drops to about 50 mb/s. Heating is practically absent: 38 degrees – the maximum mark after almost 3.5 hours of continuous operation. The temperature was measured by the same AIDA, filling the entire volume of the disk with blocks of 8 Mb.
An interesting result was in Atto Disk Benchmark. In it we found a low reading speed of small blocks from 512 to 4096 bytes at the depths of queues from one to four. Monopoly Casino Conclusion – the drive is remarkable for working with large files, but as soon as it comes to small files, problems appear, which is especially noticeable in mixed modes.

Patriot P300 NVMe 1 TB
If the first drive is quite an ordinary, then the second is already much more interesting. The reason is one of the most affordable M.2 2280 NVME PCIE 3.0 disks with TLC 3D nand. In our case, it is assembled on the basis of a four -channel controller SM2263XT and an array of memory of the same micron. "In our case" here it is not by chance: Patriot P300 exists in different configurations and, most likely, it depends on the market where it comes. For example, to a foreign edition Tweaktown The viewer for the review got with the controller PHISON E13T.
However, this does not change anything dramatically, since inherently controllers are similar. The main nuance is that they do not have a DRAM buffer, but they compensate for HMB technology ( Host Memory Buffer ), which allows the controller to use a small part of the RAM of the PC as a buffer. Of course, this imposes its restrictions. Firstly, in the case of a disk connection via USB-translators, HMB will no longer work. Secondly, the volume of RAM, which the drive can “take” himself is extremely small: these are not gigabytes, and not hundreds of megabytes of the DRAM buffer, as in models with classic controllers, so that the speed will still inevitably drop.
Tested P300 the same. Started at a glance at the work of the SLC-Kash in AIDA64, filling the entire disc with 8 MB blocks. At the peak speed (1.5 GB/s), the drive did not work long: the cache volume was about 15%, after that the record went directly to the array at a speed of about 350 MB/s, and at the end of the bar it dropped until 193 MB/s. The temperature of the memory chips at the same time was about 70 degrees, the controller – 82.
Crystaldiskmark revealed problems when working with small blocks, especially when random and recording. With linear record and reading, everything is normal: full compliance with the declared 1.65 GB/s and 2.1 GB/s.
And finally, Atto Disk Benchmark. If you look at the test results with small blocks from 512 to 4096 bytes with a queue depth of four, everything looks good, but at a depth of a unit P300 showed performance worse than P210 with SATA interface.

Conclusions
Of the two most interesting drives considered today, of course, P300. Its main trump cards are high-quality memory and extremely low price, almost the same as ordinary SATA-disks. This should be enough to cross out its main minus – problems when working with small blocks at the small depths of the queues. However, if you do not use it as a system disk or a carrier for work programs that constantly load some small files, everything will be in order: for games and storage of “heavy” media, it will be enough with the head.
As for the second model – P210, the impression was not so positive about it, since there is Crucial MX 500 by 700 rubles more expensive and exactly 4.5 times faster in mixed operating modes.
